Pug Peeps

We were walking on the Coastal Trail in Miramar yesterday when we met a Pug Peep. We didn't catch the name of the nice young woman in knee boots, but her pug's name is Cookie.  Cookie's mom scratched my head behind my ears and said, "The only thing better than pugs are the people who love them."

Vote for Me

I had my first casting call! Last Sunday, Mom and Dad took me to Colma where the local TV station, KOFY, was holding one of several casting calls for dogs for mayor of each of the nine Bay Area counties (http://www.kofytv.com/election-2012/). Dad and I visited with the other candidates while Mom filled out a questionnaire. There was a Frenchie named Dexter and Duke the Great Dane and a dog with a beaded collar that read, "Little." When my turn came, I sat in the big, leather armchair and tried to look regal for the cameras. Next month, the TV station will have our photos up, and you'll be able to vote for me for Mayor of San Mateo County!

Faery pug

Mom and Dad went to Faerieworlds in Eugene, Oregon last week and saw Sharon Knight and Donovan perform, while I played with my buds at Klaws, Paws and Hooves. All they brought me back was this silly pair of Faery wings. I wish they had saved me some of their tri-tip sandwich...

I went to daycare today or, rather, Kamp K-9 at Klaws, Paws and Hooves in Montara. I played with several dogs, including Wasabi and my special buddy, Fiona, She and her big brother Wasabi are both French Bulldogs, so we are distantly related, I guess. Katheryn brought me home this evening. After dinner (spaghetti with meat sauce) I conked out on the couch while Mom was still working on the computer.

Dad made spaghetti tonight and I got a little bit of ground beef! Mom took this picture of me last night. I know I should have gotten up to supervise their making the bed, but I was just too comfortable.

Miramar

Saturday was warm and sunny, so we went for a walk on the trail at Miramar and coffee at Ebb Tide cafe. Well. Mom and Dad had coffee and almond cake, but I got treats, which were much better. We sat outside with a view of the ocean and all the other dogs and people passing by. On the trail, we had to stop several times for the bicyclists. They make Mom nervous ever since she got knocked over by a bicyclist last summer who claimed he was "mesmerized by her purple hat." Mom isn't waiting until she's an old lady to wear purple. I started panting, so Mom carried me part of the way on the trail. As we walked past the houses at the beginning of the trail, Mom and Dad kept saying, "I wants dat house, Pug." I don't know why. It must be some kind of "in" joke. The only house I want is the one with the sign under the window that says, "Bailey's Window." Bailey's the German Shepherd who lives there; once in a while we see him in his window. But if we had that house, I would change the sign to read, "Louie's Window."

Today was a BIG DAY! First, we walked in the "Pooches on Parade" (http://www.poochesonparade.org) through downtown Half Moon Bay, along with a couple of hundred dogs, including a pair of pugs. I was wearing my ruff and a star-and-stripes bow attached to my harness, which is about all the costume I'll put up with. One dog had a Zorro costume and another had blue stars painted on his fur. There was even a human dressed as a dog, but walking on two legs. A couple of dogs were wearing cameras on their backs, recording the parade from our perspective. We also saw several goats and ponies, although I ignored them. I stopped a lot along the route to be petted and sniff for treats, but there was only candy for humans. I wish someone would have thrown dog treats! Maybe next year.

After the parade came the BarkBQ at Cameron's. Each dog who had walked in the parade got a goodie bag. I also had a frozen peanut butter-flavored sweet treat (see the last picture below). Mom and Dad had beer and barbequed chicken, sausages and ribs, along with baked beans, potato salad, pasta salad and rolls. Mom gave me a little of her chicken. I got to see some Shih Tzu puppies in a wagon and lots of dogs, including my old neighbor Rusty.

Thanks to all the organizers and a Happy Fourth of July to everyone!

It's a lovely evening here on the coast, the kind of evening when we sometimes go out in the magic box. Last week, it was "yappy hour" at the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay. There was dispensers of chicken- and beef-flavored waters and baskets of treats for us pooches, and drinks for the humans. We wandered around on the manicured lawn, admiring the view of the golf course and the ocean below, or at least the humans did. We dogs were more interested in sniff-and-greet. I got petted and told how handsome I am and got to sit on Mom's lap by the firepit. The best thing was the bag of lobster treats (http://www.dailycandy.com/new-york/article/124989/Bocces-Bakery-Lobster-Roll-Dog-Biscuits)Mom bought from the nice lady from Annabee's in Pacifica (www.annabees.com).

Welcome

Welcome to Louie's Lair: Life on the California Coast. Above is the Louie in question, a retired male show pug who will be four years old on his next birthday, September 10; the Lair is the home he shares with his human mom and dad.

Louie's days are filled with adventures, like rides in the "magic box" (a.k.a. the car) and explorations of the back garden, along with plenty of snoozing and cuddling, walks and treats. Some of his favorite things are belly rubs, sitting on the clean laundry, and nibbling grass to get Mom's attention.
Like most dogs, he provides warmth, companionship.  a listening ear,  endless entertainment, and a perspective on what's really important in life: unconditional love.
